Review and region code hacks for the Philips new progressive scan DVD Player w/ 720/1080i/1080p Upconversion – DVP3982/37.

Our daughter bought this player a couple of weeks ago in Wal-Mart on the cheap and I have to admit that this is one heck of a player!! So far it has played everything that she has thrown at it and it does it very well. She has a few DivX, MPG, VCD, MP3, XviD and even some DVD-R’s and they all play beautifully. If your looking for a quality player at a very reasonable price, then I highly recommend the Phillips DVP3982.

The Philips DVP3982 1080p Upconverting DVD Player with HDMI and DivX Ultra features DVD playback with 1080p HDMI up conversion with one-cable connectivity. It’s your dream player with flawless, true-to-life picture quality and the ability to play virtually any disc! This Philips DVD player delivers your movies and music entertainment experience.

DivX Ultra Home Theater Certified
DivX is video compression software, which enables high quality video to be compressed into very small files then downloaded onto CD-R or CD-RW and played back with very little loss of quality.

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
The DVP-3982 features an HDMI output, capable of upconverting video signals to 720p/1080i and 1080p. This technology enables the DVP-3982 to carry high-definition audio and video information through a single cable and achieving the highest quality picture and clearest sound available.

Progressive Scan
The DVP-3982 is a progressive scan DVD player, capable of scanning an entire video frame at once; scan-lines commonly associated with interlaced video are drastically reduced. The result is a spectacularly clear image with no motion artifacts (stair-stepping), and details so sharp they seem as if they’re etched onto the screen.

Multi-Format Player
Don’t worry about limited playback capabilities; it’s compatible with DVD Audio/Video, DVD+R/W, CD, CD-R/W, SVCD, VCD, DivX Ultra, MP3, WMA, JPEG, HD-JPEG, and TIFF formats.

Windows Media Audio (WMA) Compatibility
This player is compatible with WMA files that are encoded by using the Windows Media Player version 9 or Windows Media Player for Windows XP. Files are recognized by their file extension ‘WMA’.

Features Included:

    * DivX Ultra Home Theater certified
* High Definition Multimedia Interface
* Progressive Scan
* Multi-Format Player
* Windows Media Auto Compatibility

The Philips DVP3960/37 has enough features to be your primary player in your entertainment system, yet cheap enough to use as a second DVD player in a bedroom or kids room. As well as progressive scan, the DVP3960/37 offers HDMI digital video and audio connection with 1080i high definition video upscaling. You can upscale your existing DVD movies to 720p or 1080i depending on the resolution of your HDTV.

The design of the DVP3960/37 is neat and compact but the DVD player does feel flimsy and cheaply constructed when compared to higher end models. The remote control is just OK, although not well laid out. For the budget conscious consumer, however, these are minor complaints. The Philips DVP3960/37 is a feature rich DVD player with 1080i upscaling, excellent disc compatibility and a price that won’t break the bank.

To make your Philips DVP3960/37 Region free follow these steps.
Power with no disc
Open Tray
Select Setup
Preferences
Down Once
Press 138931
Use Up/Down to select 0 for ALL
Press Play
Your DVD player is now able to play DVDs from any region in the world.
Also for storing large amounts of data. 25GBs can be held on a single-layer disc and can be used for recording over 2 hours of HDTV or in the case of standard-definition TV more than 13 hours. 50gbs can be held on dual-layer versions of the discs.

The term “Blu-ray” was named from the fact that this new format uses a blue-violet laser while most optical disc formats such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD-RAM and DVD±RW, use a red laser to write and read data. Blu-ray products can be made backwards compatible with the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup to allow playback of DVDs and CDs.The blue-violet laser used in Blu-ray uses a 405nm wavelength vs 650nm for the red laser.This allows data to be packed more tightly so it’s possible to fit more data on the same sized disk. The better focus of the Blu-ray laser is what enables Blu-ray Discs to hold 25GB/50GB.

With the growth of HDTV the demand for the ability to record HD programming is quickly increasing. Blu-ray was designed for this application and according to the designers of the Blu-ray standard it will have the support of direct recording of the MPEG-2 TS used by digital broadcasters. This will alow direct recording of HDTV broadcasts without any extra processing or quality loss.

If you want a cheap DVD player that will play just about any format this might be the one for you.

I have quit a few DVD players around the house including the famous Philips DVP642. The DVP3040 will do everything the DVP642 will but better and around $20 cheaper.

I like it’s ability to play almost all forms of Divx, Xvid and other AVI format video files.

The video quality on this player can compete with most players in the $120 range but can be bought for under $50. One of my favorite changes with most of Philips’ new players is their new remotes. They have made them a bit more user friendly with a better button layout. The button functions just seam to be more where you would expect them.

One great feature is the ability to make it region free with a simple hack. So if you like to buy alot of international movies you will be able to buy from any country and your movie will play.

To make Region Free simply open the tray. Press 99990 on the remote control and your DVP304 is now region free.

One small negative for some people is the lack of a S-Video output. I does however have composite and the higher resolution component outputs.

The Bottom Line: For the price the pros outweigh the cons. Highly recommended!

Product Features

* Progressive-scan component video outputs deliver extraordinarily colorful images to compatible TVs and virtually eliminate dot crawl and flicker
* Progressive Scan Video output that creates a picture in a single sweep of the screen, unlike the traditional interlaced output, which uses two sequential, “interlaced” sweeps at a slower speed to create an image. Because it displays twice the frames per second, progressive-scan video is clearer and more film-like, with less visible flicker than apparent with interlaced video. A high-definition TV (HDTV) is required to detect the most noticeable difference between progressive-scan and interlaced video output.

* 108MHz, 12-bit video digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion

* 192kHz, 24-bit audio digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion

* Video upsampling technology decreases distortion for improved picture quality

* Flip photos, rotate, slideshow and zoom play functions

* Outputs: analog audio, component video, composite video and coaxial digital audio

* Parental controls and child lock prevent your child from being exposed to undesirable material

* Trilingual on-screen display allows you to choose from English, French and Spanish

* Standard remote included

* Plays DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW, SVCD, DivX, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, JPEG, WMA and MP3 formats

Philips DVP3040 Great audio and video performance

* Progressive Scan for razor-sharp and flicker free images
