
Blu-ray high-definition format movies have accounted for more than 60% of the market since the third week of January, outpacing sales in the competing HD DVD format, figures from market research has shown.
As of Jan. 21, Blu-ray sales have ranged from a low of 63% to a high of 69%. On the week ended Feb. 25, the latest figures available, HD DVD accounted for 35% of the market, compared with a big 65% for Blu-ray.
Hollywood and consumer electronics manufacturers are picking sides in support of either HD DVD or Blu-ray. 20th Century Fox,Goldwyn-Mayer, Walt Disney Pictures, and Sony are only releasing DVDs in Blu-ray, while Universal Studios is only distributing in HD DVD. Player manufacturers, Hitachi, Sony and Philips favor Blu-ray, while NEC and Toshiba support HD DVD.
